Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $3.2 billion to resolve allegations that it was involved in selling unapproved medicines, and that its research into the drug's effectiveness is "unclear," the company announced today.

The company announced the agreement today as part of a settlement reached between AstraZeneca and U. S. regulators.

"This is a serious matter for both of our clients, as it is in the U. S., and we will seek to resolve it," said U. Attorney for the District of New Jersey David K. Eisenberg, who represented the company in a civil lawsuit filed against AstraZeneca in 2010.

The case is one of 14 that were transferred from the United States in 2010 to federal prosecutors following an investigation into AstraZeneca's alleged conduct in selling unapproved medicines.

"We've had multiple investigations into AstraZeneca's practices in the U. and the company's conduct in the other country," said John H. Dolan, special agent in charge of the U. Food and Drug Administration.

The allegations in the case arise from AstraZeneca's investigation into whether the company knew about AstraZeneca's potential to promote the cancer drug, Nexium. The company has asserted that Nexium is a treatment for patients with heart failure. AstraZeneca was previously known as AstraZeneca Inc.

The case was brought by David H. Johnson, MD, and his wife, Dr. Janet Johnson, MD, who was employed by AstraZeneca. Johnson was employed as a research chemist at the company's research laboratories in New York. During the investigation, Johnson received information from AstraZeneca that the company had received a shipment of Nexium from Mexico.

"The investigation is a serious matter, and we believe it is imperative that the U. government take the necessary steps to ensure that the FDA can provide information about the drug and any information that may be available to the public," said Dolan. "We believe that the best course of action is to hold AstraZeneca to strict regulations governing its sales and marketing of Nexium."

Johnson's investigation revealed that AstraZeneca knew that the company was using Nexium in the U. and had already received the shipment. In addition, Johnson was aware that the company had already received information from the manufacturer that the company was using Nexium in the U.

Johnson was not immediately available for comment.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has suspended AstraZeneca's marketing of Nexium as a treatment for the rare heartburn disorder known as Acid Reflux Disease (GERD).

The company has also asserted that AstraZeneca did not receive the package of Nexium that was sent to the United States. The FDA issued a warning in 2010 that the company should not be allowed to market its drug, but it had not received any shipments or the package of the medication from the company.

An FDA-approved, non-prescription version of Nexium was developed and marketed by AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca is the largest producer of Nexium in the U. It is approved for patients with mild to moderate heartburn, GERD and other conditions.

In 2010, the company submitted a safety review to the FDA to inform the agency that it had not received any reports of serious adverse events in the past year, including heartburn or other gastric symptoms.

The FDA issued an order in July 2011 to resolve the matter, which was referred to the U. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The company had previously agreed to settle the case after a settlement agreement, but the agreement was not made public.

The company was not immediately available for comment. AstraZeneca has asserted that it is responsible for the FDA's decision.

The company is expected to continue to market Nexium, but it does not have the authority to make any decisions about Nexium's safety or marketing.

The company has also asserted that it is responsible for the FDA's decision in a settlement agreement between AstraZeneca and U.
